I ran across this video of the Asterix robot design by Osaka University in Japan. I particularly like the symmetry of the chassis. It allows the robot to walk like a pinwheel and operate when upside down. One portion of the design I thought was creative was when they attach wheels to the robots legs, er arms, uh whatever. There is an example of the robot in the video flattening out and rolling like a wheeled vehicle, and another where it adjusts its limbs to run in a 360 degree circle. This allows it to walk and roll. I can imagine that sometime in the near future we’ll see robotic systems that can mimic skaters in their motion. Using both the wheeled and legged motions seems to be an efficient and versatile design.
